Goodbye, Omar

It looks as if the rumors regarding Omar Hunter are true.

ORLANDO -- One of the more impressive players in Orlando at the inaugural Under-Armour All-American game has been defensive tackle Omar Hunter (Buford, Ga.). Hunter confirmed to Scouts Inc.'s Craig Haubert today that he is no longer committed to Notre Dame and is now looking at three schools.

According to Hunter's head coach Jess Simpson, It was a tough call to make a change of heart and had more to do with distance than anything else. Hunter's character meant that he is not one that would easily change face.

Omar Hunter is now considering USC, Florida and Auburn.

And the South Bend Tribune is reporting that the decommitment was a mutual decision:

According to an Internet report earlier this week by Rivals.com's Mike Farrell, the Notre Dame coaching staff had informed Hunter that if he chose to take other official visits like he was talking about, then the Notre Dame offer would be withdrawn.

"That's a fact," competing recruiting analyst Tom Lemming confirmed Tuesday from the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. "You can print that."

As for my thoughts on the matter, obviously Omar Hunter is a fantastic football player.  Anyone who says that losing him does not matter is either ignorant about recruiting or a liar.  I personally have not seen a better highlight tape in the past couple of seasons and the reviews of him had him seeing playing time from day 1.  I think it's a huge loss but not something that will ultimately ruin our program.  We've got a good young DT in Ian Williams and have four incoming defensive linemen, all of whom play DT or could potentially grow into a tackle.  All four are very good.  And don't be surprised if we go after another DT - word on the street is that Mike Martin, a former Michigan commit, could become a possibility shortly.

I also have to applaud Charlie Weis' resiliency during this Omar Hunter saga.  He made a big deal out of the ND verbals switching their pledges late in the game last year and is sticking by his guns with Omar.  Good for him - say what you want about his coaching ability, but he's a man of principle.  It likely wouldn't have mattered anyway, as I think once a recruit wants to take a look at other places, he's as good as gone, but I like the move by Weis.  And I'm not blaming Omar either, if he's happier somewhere else, then let him go.  I also thank him for not stringing us along and then dumping us on signing day, unlike some of the guys last year.  At the end of the day, it just wasn't meant to be.  It's a loss for the Irish, but don't let a 17-year old's college choice get you down.

Hello Newman
From what I've been reading on Rivals.com, Brandon Newman has been a pleasant surprise at the Army All-American practices.  I know he wasn't as highly recruited as Hunter, but he is still no slouch.  Newman, 6-1 305lbs can make some waves and impress some people.  Also in today's South Bend Tribune, there is a nice article on Newman  Losing Hunter is obviously a big loss, but with Ian Williams, Hafis Williams, Pat Kuntz, Sean Cwynar, I would like to think one of those guys can pick up the slack.  I'm sure Newman and Cwynar are licking their chops now, that Hunter is out of the picture.  They both could see some real playing time next year.  GO IRISH!!!
