The Eagles Have Not Yet Landed: Boston College Mini-Review
It really came down to the four plays - the big run by Whitworth, the bad snap on the punt, the interception, the celebration penalty/poor kickoff and coverage - that set up the Boston College scores, as the Notre Dame defense managed to get gouged for nearly five hundred yards and still contain Heisman hopeful Matt Ryan. Ryan had the pleasure of finding rather open receivers with little hurry from a pass rush, but at the times he did need to move around the pocket, he showed a high level of "escapability." Tackling was still poor, and certain defensive backs who've been on the team for multiple seasons still can't find the ball when it's in the air, but I'm not sure we have anyone better to put in at this point. Trevor Laws deserves All-American consideration, despite the woes of his team. He is a monster on the defensive line, taking out two or three offensive linemen on the same play at times.
Jimmy Clausen made a few nice throws, but looked pretty overwhelmed most of the time. Sharpley's two best performances to date have come behind big, running the hurry up and flinging the ball all over the place. He's made some nice throws, evaded pressure well and inspired the team, but he's also made some awful, awful reads. Still, I'm starting him against Southern Cal, simply because of the reaction of the sideline when he started rolling the offense down the field for our first score. You can tell the team believes in him, and at least until we're officially out of bowl contention or being suffocated by the Trojans, I think we ride the hot hand. I'm not willing to give up on Clausen, but perhaps he should begin his first battle with Troy on the sidelines.
Still making stupid penalties (although that officiating crew was pretty awful, although at least they were consistent in their screw-ups), still screwing up offensive line assignments (Chris Stewart seriously isn't better than what we're rolling with now?) and still dropping passes, but for a moment, when a freshman linebacker picked off a Heisman frontrunner and cut the lead to six points, things seemed right in the world. With the exception of a few "veteran leaders" who continually bring nothing to the table, this team is playing hard and capable of winning.
This is midterm week for Rob and I to go along with being the build-up to the annual showdown with the Trojans, so coverage will be light until Tuesday afternoon for me. After that. expect a blow-out preview of what's ailing the Trojans, a look at if there's anyway we can take advantage of said ailments, reasons why we mayb should expect a beatdown at the hands of our west coast overlords and all sorts of awesome (sappy?) motivational videos I like to find on YouTube.
More Boston College review coming, as well as the BlogPoll (South Florida is number one in a walk), but first, some numbers by OCDomer I found really interesting:

fredo is not ready for prime time
- without a number of bogus penalty calls against nd and non calls against boston college by that all acc ref crew that had to everything in their power to save private ryan and fredo from leaving south bend with a loss, notre dame would have won this game.
- perhaps fredo has graduated to become sonny since 2 weeks from now fredo/ sonny will be gunned down at the toll booths, just as sonny was, since no acc ref crew is going to save them from defeat at va tech and get out of that town alive.
- if evan, rather than jimmy, had absorbed all of those vicious hits by bc with no penalties called by the all acc ref crew, would evan have been able to stage the comeback in the 2nd half?
- we do not know, but we are sure proud to have both evan and jimmy ready to beat usc which comes into town riddled with injuries, in a state of terror because their cover on bushgate has been blown, and with a qb, mark sanchez, who has exactly one game under his belt and loves to throw picks, just like his predecessor booty.
- since the pac 10 and their refs know that fedworld is watching, they will not dare to come into south bend with another crooked pac 10 ref crew, like the one we saw steal nd's win over usc in 2005.

oc domer lacks vision
- there is nothing wrong with charlie weis and his coachung staff, including coach latina. the almost complete void in the 2004 and 2005 recruiting classes has nothing to do with them, but goes back to bob davie who took over recruiting during the last few holtz years, when lou's wife was ill, and let the notre dame recruiting network die on the vine while lazy bob davie sat in his office in south bend admiring himself in the mirror.
- charlie and his staff accomplished miracles in 2005 and 2006 with that one great 2003 recruiting class and a few others and with no depth anywhere and no talent at many key positions.
- they also went out on the road and recreated the notre dame recruiting network by personnally visiting high schools all over the us and spending a lot of time with the high school coaches, who had not seen anyone from notre dame for decades, coach rooneyat notre dame high school in sherman oaks, ca being just one example.
- in case you have not noticed, charlie brought in top 10 recruiting classes in 2006 and 2006 and he and corwin and their staffs have lined up the no 1 class for 2008, not one of whom has showed any signs of changing his verbal commitment because of the disaster on paper, so far, this season.
- things like that do not happen unless coaches convey their dedication to recruits and their families and are forthright and honest with them.
- oc, we suggest that you take a step back from your numbers cruncher and take a look at the forest, instead of just a few trees.
- there are no other coaches who could have brought notre dame back from the brink of death in college football.
- if there are, as you claim, many other college football programs out there that play the game with integrity and real student athletes and have done better than this 2007 team and their coaches this year, taking into account their killer opening schedule and the nearly complete absence of talent in their 2004 and 2005 recruiting classes, mention a few names and you will see that there are none.
- sure, charlie and corwin and these young players can and will do better. however, we should thank them for their dedication, courage under fire, and ability to turn around notre dame's football program, with integrity, instead of taking stupid pot shots at them as if they were just statistics.
- we live in los angeles. we are intimately familiar with the wrong way to turn a football program around, as oc should be. you just need to look at pete carroll and his renegade usc football program.
- we are immensely proud of charlie weis and corwin brown and their staffs, including coach latina, and of the fine courageous young student athletes who have helped to keep notre dame football on the field in the face of impossible adversities while charlie and his fine staff hit the pavement and turned recruiting and the program around.
- the last thing they need is to be hit by baseless insults from what should be friendly sources.

bob
did bob davie run over your dog? tell me, when is the last time bob davie coached a game at ND? November of 2001? get over it.
charlie weis, the same person that you are blindly loyal to, said that you are only as good as your record indicates. we are a 1-6 football team and it's not because of "crooked refs" or your other conspiracy theories. it's because this team was not good enough to beat michigan state, purdue, georgia tech, boston college, michigan, and penn state (all double-digit margins of defeat). period.
and you defend latina? give me a break. the offensive line is a complete joke and the ND rushing offense is by far the worst in the country. as OCDomer said, many teams do more with less talent. tell me, why is that?
to make it easier for you, i'll number each one of my points:
- ND gave up 459 yards of offense to BC. was that because of the refs?
- like OCDomer said, 32.1 rushing yards per game is pathetic. that has to fall on latina and somewhat on weis. aldridge and allen were both highly regarded recruits so it's not the personnel. it's the coaching staff failing to find ways to effectively run the football.
- i hate to admit it but "fredo" has beatem us four-straight times. im sure you can find an excuse for each one though.
- i hope ND pounds SC next week, but im sure you already have all your excuses lined up in case that doesn't happen.
- you are the most blatant homer i have ever seen. you are a cancer on these ND blogs and you make all of us look stupid. i love the irish more than anything but being a blind optimist doesn't make a good fan. i want the team to get better and am willing to criticize them when they fail to play to their abilities. this isn't your kid's little-league team, this is a big-time college football program.

Most of what you wrote is true ...
True, the talent level in our upper classes is down. We aren't loaded with 4- and 5-star offensive linemen in the upper classes. But the guys we do have are quality Div-I athletes. Sully, Turk, Duncan were not total stiffs coming out of high school. Sam Young was VERY highly recruited (great get by CW!) and now has around 20 starts under his belt. Yet these guys are playing terribly as a unit. I am not saying they should be leading the nation in rushing yards. I am saying that we have enough talent and experience to at least be COMPETENT run blockers. Armando Allen, James Aldridge, Robert Hughes don't need big holes to get yards - they just need a crease. Instead, they are getting hit behind the line of scrimmage as soon as they get the ball.
As for other schools that "play the game with integrity and real student athletes and have done better than this 2007 team and their coaches this year" here are a few stats for you (I know you hate facts). The following teams comprise the Top 10 programs for football graduation rates, as recently announced by the NCAA. (For comparison purposes, Notre Dame has a total of 225 rushing yards this season).
Navy is 4-2 overall, and has rushed for 1,742 yards this season.
Army is 3-4 and has 554 rushing yards.
Stanford is 2-4 and has 772 rushing yards.
Northwestern is 4-3 with 843 rush yds.
Duke is 1-6 with 468 rush yds.
Boston College is 7-0 and has 1,012 rushing yards.
Wake Forest is 4-2 with 875 rush yds.
Vanderbilt is 3-3 with 887 rush yds.
Air Force is 5-2 with 1,823 rush yds.
So, of the Top 10 graduation rate football programs, Notre Dame has, BY FAR, the lowest rushing totals for the season. The closest teams to us (Duke and Army) still have more than DOUBLE our rushing yards.
Do I think that Notre Dame, even with a lower level of talent than usual, has less talented players in the offensive line than the teams listed above? Worse talent than all three service academies, Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, and Stanford? No, I think that Notre Dame's offensive lineman have more talent than those teams. Yet, even if you factor in our very tough schedule to date, those teams are getting more out of their O-line talent than the Irish are.
Robert, as I wrote in my blog, I still think Coach Weis is the right man for this job. He has done an amazing job recruiting. But just as he had to make a tough call for the good of the team last year by bringing Corwin Brown in, he needs a new offensive line coach.
I think you are reading more into my post than is there. I am not criticizing anyone's character or their hard work or their heart. I am criticizing the results. The results on the field indicate that notwithstanding everything else, we need to try something else in coaching the O-line.

The biggest problem this season...
It isn't just the Irish, but it has certainly hurt our team badly this season. There is a trend in football to play a soft zone in "and long" type situations where the coverage seems to start 3 yards outside of the first down marker. The defensive play call in these situations needs to be a little more aggressive.
It's the same thing that keeps happening toward the end of games when teams go into a prevent defense and allow the offense to march down the field and score to tie or win the game. The prevent is for preventing the long ball...it isn't a defense for 1:30 left in the 4th quarter. By the way...anything about the prevent isn't so much me talking about the Irish as football in general. God I would love to see the Irish playing some prevent...that means they'd be playing with a lead.
