Embarrassing

At least it wasn't me.

Update [2007-10-12 13:31:48 by CW]: Here is an explanation in today's Observer. As expected, you can blame this on ESPN. Why would anyone want to see two people who know the program talking X's and O's? I blame Skip Bayless.

I got a phone call on Tuesday from ESPN.

They told me they were looking for someone to debate a Boston College student on "First Take" on Thursday.

People who know me know I'm not much of a trash talker, but I agreed. Who could turn down a chance to be on live national television?

The producer, Mr. Gabriel Goodman, told me that my Boston College counterpart was Jeff Weinstein, sports editor of The Heights, Boston College's student newspaper. Goodman also told me that this debate would not be about Xs and Os.

"This is time for some good, old-fashioned smack talk," he said.

We filmed live at WNDU. I found out that my only contact with Weinstein and the host, Jay Crawford, would be from the headphone in my right ear. I wouldn't be able to see them. When I put the headphone on, the audio from "First Take" started playing.

A few minutes later, Goodman interrupted to say our segment was about to begin and added, "The other kid said he's ready to kick your ass."

I heard some music, and then Crawford talking. He asked me a question - Is Boston College the most overrated team in football?

I had been warned this question would come up. And the honest answer is that I do feel BC is overrated - although not horribly so.

So I said basically that, only I had been told I was debating and I most certainly did not want to have my ass kicked. I began "obviously they're overrated, they haven't played anybody!" I was doing my best Tony Kornheiser impression.

The next question went to Jeff - Is Charlie Weis overrated? This is how Jeff began - "I have a lot of respect for Charlie Weis."

Uh oh.

Now I felt like a jerk. Jeff wasn't trying to kick my ass at all. He was being nice.

I was asked about the infamous Letter to the Editor by Bob Griffin and I defended his position - rushing the field during a poor season because we beat an opponent that we defeat consistently when we're good just reinforces that we're bad and gives the opponent status that they didn't earn during the game.

Then I was asked about if students at Notre Dame consider Boston College a "safety school." I knew this question was coming - Goodman had talked to me about it. He asked me to find a "Backup College" T-shirt and show it on air. So I asked one of our sports writers for his, and I showed it to the world.

All through this, Jeff continued to be nice.

I felt like more and more of a jerk, but what could I do? I wasn't about to sell out my friend Bob Griffin or lie and deny that a lot of Notre Dame students were admitted to Boston College as well.

After hearing me describe the shirt (I can only assume he couldn't see me either), Jeff said "I'm very proud of the degree I'm going to get from Boston College."

I told him I would be too. After all, Boston College is a great school.

So we ended on that positive note. But the damage was already done. Jeff was conciliatory and friendly, and I came out swinging and making a fool out of myself.

Jeff kicked my ass, and he hadn't even been trying to.

Update [2007-10-12 14:27:15 by CW]: And EDSBS weighs in with their own "guest columnist" on the BC/ND rivalry. Just a reminder, the guy who wrote the Viewpoint letter saying we shouldn't storm the field also wrote a "Hey, one-loss teams have won championships before!" piece after the Michigan debacle last year (not to be confused with this year's). That article completely neglected the fact those losses were generally of the "Triple overtime" or "on the road" variety, as opposed to "by four touchdowns at home." God is in the details, friends.

This makes me cringe.
As an ND graduate this is totally embarrassing.

Whatever happened to being confident yet humble?  I always felt that the University of Notre Dame, it's fans and students always stood for what was decent in College Football.  As such, I could not understand how others could hate Notre Dame.  Well, this clip makes it painfully obvious.

How disgraceful.  My apologies to all the Boston College faithful.

wow...
That is just saaaad...

A) ND fans should never storm the field.  This is Notre Dame...we should expect to win.  It isn't cocky...I would expect the same for Michigan, USC or any other traditionally based programs.

B) I hate the ESPN argument model...and having these kids be the ones participating is sad.

C) If we're using kids for the argument model...I wish we hadn't gotten this twerp to represent us.  Especially against a really well spoken BC participant.

What a great time...
...to talk smack.  We're 1-5, dude.  It's delusional arrogance like that which causes hatred from other fan bases.  Couldn't there have been a better representative of ND?  Props to the BC fan for taking the high road.

Embarrassing
This commentator speaks for himself, not for Notre Dame.  As a Notre Dame graduate which I am, this sort of spaced-out talk is offensive. Sports should be an invitation to become better through personal improvement, and to become a means to bring people together.  This kind of talk is contrary, and offensive.  Apologies to Boston College.

we think that the performance was excellent
  1. why do you think that the espn set up this debate? the ratings will be sky high for this game on nbc.
  2. has anyone at boston college ever apologized to notre dame for the completely classless conduct of their players and fans at notre dame stadium? the answer is no.
  3. like the players on this 2007 notre dame team, we believe that notre dame will beat boston college. after all, we were there in 1993 when boston college pulled that great upset agianst a notre dame team that was justifiably ranked no 1 in the nation after beating florida state in that game of the century. unranked boston college accomplished that upset by playing great football.
  4. why should this notre dame team nor be able to do the same, even though we do not see any impressive wins on the resume of boston college coming in to this game? after all, the gtech yellow jackets are famous for their opening season upsets and for getting beat up and tired after the 1st few games of every season.
  5. competition, along with a certain amount of trash talking, is a very good thing in football and in all areas of human endeavor.
  6. if boston college comes in and actually wins this game, we will all wish them well and hope that they go all the way for the 1st time in their history.
  7. however, for the players on this nd team and any real nd fans to go into this game not having faith that notre dame will win would not be of any help to our jesuit cousins, whom we dearly love and respect, but not before an athletic or other contest, like notre dame's impossible victory over and no 1 ranked boston college team in ice hockey last season.
  8. football and life are not games for the weak of heart or spirit or for whimps. people who think or do otherwise are simply doomed to lose.
congratulations on a fine debate,

There is no Congratulations here.
I could not disagree more.

As Lou Holtz would say about winning, "act as if you have been there before".  Your comments smacks of the arrogance of someone who has never won but rather is instead resting on the laurels of long-ago championships.  Past transgressions on the part of Boston College players or fans are irrelevant and do not excuse the haughtiness of this "debate".  Likewise to be respectfully confident does not translate to being any less in terms of spirit or heart.

It saddens me to say that Round One has already gone to Boston College, and based on your response, they also lead in points for Round Two.  "Fans" like you give Notre Dame its terrible reputation of supposed superiority.

Please.  Do the rest of us Irish fans a favor and root for another team.

Go Irish!

i agree with jerry
i used to fall back on the fact that ND fans and players always took the high road.

where i disagree is that the past transgressions are irrelevant - actually its the complete opposite.  the ND players never trashed their field and/or their locker rooms.  for the most part (at least until now) ND fans were never overly obnoxious to BC fans even though BC fans traveling to south bend would go as far as trying to disrupt OUR pep rallies.

BC's fans and players have shown a complete lack of class.  however, im extremely disappointed to see an ND fan stoop to their level.

rivalries are about mutual respect between the players and the fans.  let's try to remember that.
