Pom Pom Pete at it again

Here's a cute little story I came across on USC coach Pete Carroll.  From the LA Times

USC's roster is nowhere near as star-studded as last season, but the Trojans still embrace celebrity.

That was evident during a team meeting.

As defensive coordinator Nick Holt tore into the team about a play that occurred late in practice, Carroll burst through a door in the back of the room wearing the Wonder Bread NASCAR racing suit that USC alum Will Ferrell sports as driver Ricky Bobby in the movie "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby."

Carroll approached the front of the room, but before he got a chance to speak, the similarly attired Ferrell entered through another door and shouted at him.

Players cheered, laughed and then broke for a surprise screening of the film.

"That was pretty crazy," senior center Ryan Kalil said. "Coach Carroll always has a few surprises."

What a funny guy.  It's antics like Pete's that allow me to do things like this:

His Style Works...
It is not in my nature to bash ones team or individual players or coaches. I tend to be measured and humble with my responses. But I find your post intriguing.

Being able to laugh at ones self is one of the keys to success. I always get a kick out of all the naysayer's who mock Pete Carroll's approach.

Mock it all you want but in the end it works.

I'm not some Carroll apologist; I have been more than critical of some of the things that have gone on at SC of late. Some of those issues are very serious. I feel that Coach Carroll should be more decisive in his disciplining of players who break the rules. But that is not my call.

Contrary to popular belief those issues have nothing to do with his coaching style. I would prefer that USC's success was not tainted by negative off the field issues but that is out of my hands.

I've voiced my displeasure and disappointment but that's all I can do. I wish I could change it. But I also won't run and hide at the first sign of controversy.

Coach Weis has his style, he uses what works for him and that's fine, but in the long run it's about wins and losses.

SC has had a good run with this approach so laugh all you want but there is a lot of new hardware over in Heritage Hall because of that approach.

You take the good with bad, it's not a perfect world, and I'll take Coach Carroll's style any day of the week as long as it produces positive results.

In any event welcome to SBN. I look forward to many spirited discussions in the future. SBN has good thing going here.
