Jimmy Clausen, Michael Floyd, Smith Family Lead Notre Dame Shutout Over Nevada 35-0
The headline wasn't really big enough to fit everyone who contributed today, because there were many. It's good to remember that Nevada's pass defense was putrid and the Irish let themselves get gashed on a lot of running plays, but it's good to be able to laugh and smile again after a win like this. Michael Floyd - who isn't as good as AJ Green or Julio Jones because he isn't blessed with SEC speed - had 4 catches for 189 yards and three touchdowns, anchoring Jimmy Clausen's sterling day. The running game did enough to balance out the video game passing offense, and there were 28 points in the first half rather easily. When Golden Tate and Kyle Rudolph only combine for seven catches and the offense rolls up a quick five touchdowns through three quarters, that's a good day.
The defense flew all over the field (although they sometimes targeted Colin Kaepernick's invisible companion, who got creamed by Sergio Brown at one point in the second quarter), and got the first Notre Dame shutout since 2002. This is really starting to look like a Tenuta defense with all the pre-snap movement and blitzers coming from every corner, and it's an advantage to have a secondary as stout as Notre Dame's when your defensive backs are left on islands. The whole Smith family - Brian, Toryan, Scott and Harrison - pitched in, and a Kyle McCarthy interception was the cherry on top of a great shutout effort.
This is a long season and the Irish need to keep focused and keep winning, but this is a great way to start the season. There will, of course, be loads and loads of analysis of this game and a look at Michigan in the coming days, but for now, go out and celebrate, Irish faithful. It was a long wait, but at this point, it was well worth it.

Thats right guys. Great play by Jimmy Clausen/Micheal Floyd, looking forward to that combo all year. Really happy about the dominate play of the defense hopefully it will continue all year.

This was as awesome as can be. Even our third/fourth stringers were hanging in there with Nevada… and as CW said, we gotta remember that Nevada wasn’t supposed to be a pushover.
Now let’s go to the big house and do the same to Michigan.

Who's the favorite for the Michigan game?
I’m just starting to get into college football so I don’t know what I can take away from this win. Was this outcome better than expected?

considering that in last year's opener
ND had to hold on for dear life against San Diego State (who eventually finished 2-10), yes this outcome was better than expected.
Nevada isn’t great, but they’re certainly no slouch. this was a team that ranked in the top ten nationally in total offense and Colin Kaepernick (only 188 total yds, 2 INT) is probably the 2nd or 3rd best QB that Notre Dame will face all season. it’s a team that’s going to win at least 8 games, so it’s a nice start.
i figure Michigan will be favored, probably something like 3.5 or 4 because they’re at home.

Everything I wanted...
Really, all I wanted was us to go in and beat the piss out of an inferior team. I actually really like Nevada as a WAC team and Kaepernick is a damn solid player. For us to go out, handle our business AND keep their best player in check makes me plenty happy. I’m a little worried about our run defense…our best plan of attack is probably just to force people to abandon the run by scoring and making them keep up.
Honestly I’m just so thrilled that we went out and opened the season like we SHOULD rather than that mess with San Diego State last year.
