Notre Dame at Purdue: All Day Open Thread

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Purdue Boilermakers, Sep 26, 2009 8:00 PM EDT

No rest for the weary as a beaten up Notre Dame offense and a beaten down Notre Dame defense travel to West Lafayette for a primetime showdown with the Boilermakers.  There is great college football action all day and night, so stop by over the course of the afternoon and during the game tonight.

Go Irish, Beat Boilers.

I freaking hate Purdue

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

my dream

is to get them off the schedule.

by mcboomofdoom on Sep 26, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I still hate Drew Brees to this day...

But I would rather remove Boston College than Purdue, at least we occasionally beat Purdue.

Joining the fun here

MSU, Purdue, BC, Navy—these games are all high-risk, no reward kind of deals imho. Without a conference I can’t see how we can lighten up on games like this and still maintain a schedule strength that wouldn’t be either laughable or incredibly tough.

by Wet Luzinski on Sep 26, 2009 5:24 PM EDT reply actions

Oh please...

Notre Dame has a cake walk schedual. It really couldn’t get much easier.

by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on Sep 26, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

This one is going to get ugly early folks.

If you’re a Notre Dame fan, dont waste your time with this one.

I know I wont.

Prediction: Purdue 28 – Notre Dame 21

Top 10 recruiting class huh? lol

by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on Sep 26, 2009 6:34 PM EDT reply actions

Well this prediction is going to look like shit

at the end of this one.

Not a surprise after realizing who posted it though.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

You have got to be kidding me...

I predict a ND loss at 28 – 21.

They eek out a pathetic win against a below average team 24 – 21.

You people watch this team all the time and I still know more about them than you. Pick something else to do with your time. Your not spending it wisely if you can’t see how these games are going to play out.

ND is a joke.

YAY!!!

this is going swimingly so far

New year...

same shitty defense.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 8:14 PM EDT reply actions

WHAT THE FUCK!!!

Why would you run out of the shotgun for one yard… GODDAMNIT!!! Terrible play call.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

Whenever your defensive line gets no pressure

you linebackers aren’t going to find lanes to get to the QB.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Then why send the Linebackers?

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, that's Tenuta's MO

I don’t condone it, it leaves the secondary alone for those routes to sit underneath. I think he wants to force the issue to make the QB make errant throws.

Coming into the year, I thought the D-line would be talented enough to get to the qb alone, guess I was wrong.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

There's a much needed defensive series.

Regardless of that dump off in the middle of the field.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

Im no QB scout...

but Clausen has a weird throwing motion. Looks like he torques his whole back and side arms it a little. My amateur eye tells me that is going to lead to some back problems.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 8:35 PM EDT reply actions

That last stop is one of the reasons Tenuta likes to blitz

TFL’s become huge. But really think he does it to force the issue for opposing QB’s. When we play USC I really hope he schemes well, their line is great.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

I love competent game callers...

that know the difference between the end around and a reverse.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

And that was a nicely drawn up play...

MAN!

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 8:55 PM EDT reply actions

I'd rather see Crist passing

over the wildcat right now Charlie.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 8:57 PM EDT reply actions

Id rather see Crist...

but only because this offense is far more effective with a QB under center

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I know, which is why I think we'd be better suited

if Crist got majority snaps today. It’s not like he’s an incompetent QB, I think he has Quinn’s potential.

I silently root for Clausen to get injured or suck so he gets PT.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree...

Im not convinced Clausen is great.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I've just never thought he had enough arm strength

of course, that’s what scouts have said about Quinn and why Russel was better (how’s that working out Oakland?).

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Being a hardcore Chiefs fan...

I have seen first hand how completely AWFUL JaMarcus is. That guy can’t hit wide open receivers that are 6 yards out

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Even my Mom was laughing at him...

and she absolutely hates football.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Great running by Hughes

good blocks to get him a lane.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 8:58 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah it would just be nice...

if we had a good offensive line more often than every 4 years

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I know, but we do have some young talented players coming up

and Seantrel (5* O-lineman, #1 prospect this year.) has ND as a top 5 school

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

ND has been getting top recruits that haven't panned out...

Until more recruits prove their worth Im not going to get my hopes up as much. Floyd was great, but Shaq Evans hasn’t impressed. and to be honest I dont think Sam Young was as good as he was built up to be.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I think Sam Young is good

but the other linemen make it rough on him.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he is good...

But not top tackle recruit in the country good.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

He should be a nice draft pick

I think he could go in the second round.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree... I think he is a very solid player...

and worth a valuable draft pick… But I had visions of him becoming a Walter Jones or Orlando Pace type. And yes that is probably unrealistic, but he was a top 10 recruit in the country.

I think ND gets a little bit of the Duke treatment in judging players in their recruiting classes.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I think offensive linemen

are judged by there size too much.

I’m not sure how great Young’s ability was, but he was 300+ with good speed IIRC.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Could be.

He was ranked only behind Andre Smith who went 7 I think. Its actually fairly impressive how well the ESPN college recruit ranker is at predicting future talent.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

WOW!!!

I dont think Ive ever seen a late hit by the receiving team on a kick return before.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

Is Bruton wearing gloves?

I’ve never seen him wear gloves.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

I say Bruton lulz

he’s gone sadly.

Man what is his name? Number 12 ugh, why does his name escape me?

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Theo Riddick

was the last player I thought would impact this team this year.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

Touchdown

speed kills.

BTW, Dayne Crist’s pocket presence is very reminiscent of Quinn’s.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

I totally agree with you

I thought a good play fake is what we were missing last year.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

well...

you have to be able to run the ball to set up play action.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I just meant Brady had a ridiculous fake hand off...

the way he would turn his body to the defense and hold the body to the side… Unbelievable.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Brian Smith just got beat.

Luckily it was overthrown. They keep going to the middle, why don’t we put a safety there? I’m confident our DB’s can cover the outside seeing as we have only allowed underneath catches.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

That was fairly good coverage by Gray

He left the QB minimal space to throw that pass.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

OOoohh Kyle Rudolph

just another fantastic Tight End to come through Notre Dame.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn't

I would eat something else of hers though.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish that on some blitzes he'd leave a cover

or put someone in the flat. That could go a long way in stopping the dump offs.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

more zone blitzes

and less all out blitzes

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

I think he has Calvin Johnson potential. He should be a great NFL player. I think Floyd has that potential, but is less likely to reach it.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno...

maybe Im not capable of being objective… But Floyd is as good as any college receiver Ive seen, and he was on pace for a ridiculous year this year before he got hurt.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

But yeah

I was hoping he would get some Heisman votes or something.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Jerry Rice wasn't that fast

You can be an exceptional receiver without blazing speed.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

by averagegatsby on Sep 26, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Excellent route runner though

That was one of the negatives from the scouts about Floyd.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

that develops though...

and Im sure thats the type of thing that only gets better. I read (or heard or saw) somewhere that Rice could make 90 degree cuts with out turning his hips.

I miss Samardjia

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

Excellent coverage

allowed the defense enough time to get to the QB.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 10:12 PM EDT reply actions

That's his name

Blanton. He never wears gloves. Why tonight?

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

if I see that Volkswagen commercial one more time

I might assault a random German tourist. I’ve been watching sports all day and must have seen it 20 times already.

I was pooping.

the one where they’re driving around and they can see the words on the road in front of them and say “I think we were in a car commercial.” It’s not the worst commercial ever, I’ve just seen it a trillion times this week.

I really want one of those though...

Im a huge fan of VW

If there is one thing I like about Clausen

is that he’s always there to support the guys.

by jdh90 on Sep 26, 2009 10:23 PM EDT reply actions

Im really impressed

with how he is handling not playing. But he is visually limping

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

Can't blame the defense

Really the offense (well Charlie) needs to step up.

I have a bad feeling about this game now

Just no confidence at all.

by Darrin. Excellent. Defense has looked fairly good today.

Does anyone call a game worse than Charlie in the 4th quarter?

This team has been fucking awful in the 4th quarter all year.

nothing wrong with an ugly win

I mean, there were lots of things wrong, but I’ll take the win

by long time listener on Sep 26, 2009 11:29 PM EDT reply actions

My prediction...28 - 21 ND loss

Final score…24 – 21 ND win

Yeah, I know my college football.

by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on Sep 27, 2009 5:53 PM EDT reply actions

The point was how close I actually was. Someone made a comment of how “off” I was going to be.

They beat Purdue by 3 points. What entertainment!
