Michigan State at Notre Dame: All Day Thread of Angst and Excitement

Michigan St. Spartans at Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Sep 19, 2009 3:30 PM EDT

It only seems fitting that this is where we end up in week three.  Two old foes, both coming off bitter, heart-breaking losses and attempting to avoid a 1-2 hole to start the season.  How the Irish are a double digit favorite, I have no idea, but I'm certainly confident in this bunch to recover from last week's stunner in Ann Arbor.

Kickoff is just after 3:30pm Eastern on NBC, and the entirety of this site's proprietors will be in attendance.  That probably means no formal recap until Monday (Springsteen in Chicago on Sunday night pushes this into definite long weekend status), but you'll have details from a wild weekend in beautiful South Bend.

Go Irish, Beat Spartans.

So if we can't talk John Gruden into it,

how about Butch Davis? He seems to have worked miracles in NC…

Al: We gotta form a government for the settlement.
Merrick: Who does?
Al: Us! You and me. Come to me in a vision! You stupid bastard

not going to be easy

to just get people to leave places for ND at this point. I fear these Weis years have put the Irish further back than they were under Willingham.

That offside kick...

Is the kind of play we need to be running… not having run against us

by SuperNewb on Sep 19, 2009 4:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

offside kicks would be a penalty

so why would ND want to do that?

Bad last series for H. Smith - late hit and then blown coverage on the td

I'm not usually one to complain about the refs...

BUT REALLY? What game are they watching?

(Regarding that Floyd TD grab…)

They're awful

I’m not sure how Floyd could be any more in bounds.

all we need is allen to get hurt and we'll have the trifecta

worst quarter ever

Weis killed the momentum with pointlessly bringing out the wildcat. Clausen and Floyd get injured. Team basically loses its mind on defense. Terrible call on Floyd play. On and on.

The destruction of a season.

My game summary ... Floyd WAS a TD, defense cant stop anyone last 2 wks, penalties why.

I cannot believe the refs didnt call a TD, penalties are sad, defense MUST play better OR we lose … again. This is not good. … please, GO Irish !!!

I don't like the wildcat

But I’ve got to admit, they pulled out the pass at just the right time. They set it up with the runs from that formation too. Now let’s never run it again.

Very bad call there. What’s the story with Clausen’s foot?

You're defense is very impressive...

holding teams to 30 or so points per game. That’ll take you far.

Oh, I get it...

You’re saying the defense ISN’T good, even though you were actually saying the opposite. Very clever. VERY clever… We were all under the impression that this defense was doing it’s job- thank you SOOO much for making it abundantly clear that they aren’t. Appreciate it.

Clausen

i’d say he’s following Quinn’s career curve… third year = stardom.

69% completion pct., 951 yards, 9 TD, 0 INT.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Sep 19, 2009 7:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And I say he has receivers that are extremely talented

they’ve saved his ass plenty of times already.

by jdh90 on Sep 19, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not arguing that

but you have to admit, that winning throw to Tate was a thing of beauty.

he’s improved tremendously from ’07 and ’08.

Unfortunately I was at work

while the game was in progress. ESPN hasn’t uploaded highlights either.

Still though, if this defense improves, this team is capable of doing good things.

big "if"

they looked like dogshit (excuse the language) today.

i still think 9-10 wins is a remote possibility. i’m glad that some of the other challenging games on the schedule (i.e. at Purdue, BC) don’t look as tough after watching those teams play today.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Sep 19, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ugly game, good win.

This offense is really top notch, and if they can run it consistantly, things look good. Even without Michael Floyd, which is a huge loss obviously.

But the defense has got to step it up- as good as the offense is, they can not count on scoring 35 points a game.

My only fear is that this team will do just enough to keep Charlie in his place, and I’m not sure that’s the best thing for this program.

Pur-don’t nest next week, then upstart Washington… both winnable games… let’s go boys.

by NumberSeven on Sep 19, 2009 10:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Totally agree

We need to fire Charlie and hire one of

Urban Meyer
Pete Carroll
Bill Belicheck
George Halas
Vince Lombardi

Then have Charlie pay back all of his salary

Then get Tebow to transfer here

Then we might have something.

Or we can just root for the exciting team we have right now. Thats the route i’m going to go.

I would seek out Gruden...

you’ll love him and his act get’s tired with pros but college guys turnover and he’ll be a rock star. just wonder if he wants to college coach…i think the ND job would be a special one he would have to consider. he would not be CW, whose arrogance is so unlike, say, Rex Ryans. RR is a players coach. CW…I don’t know who really likes him?
