Why is Notre Dame such a "hated" college sports program?
I don't get it. Where does this attitude come from? Seems like every time I listed to a new poll taken by a sports talk radio station it ends up bashing the Irish. The last I heard, and this was a while ago, was on Colin Cowherds radio show. He mentioned some big poll about asking who you felt had the worst fans in D1 sports. Notre Dame landed the number 1 spot.
I also find the same thing is applied to Duke basketball. Notre Dame has a brilliant history. They have some of the highest academic standards in football. They are one of the last old school teams. Same goes with Duke except you can add to that list, they have a coach that pretty much everyone and their grandma loves and respects in coach K.
Can anyone help me with this?

Arrogance
…but the same can be said for a lot of teams like USC, Ohio State, LSU, Texas, etc. The biggest problem people have with ND is the arrogance that surrounds the program. Fans talk constantly about the great teams of the 40s and the tradition and the Four Horseman and Knute Rockne. Well, guess what, that was over 40 years ago! People get irritated when Domers talk about how they’re the greatest program in all of college football. It just bugs people. Here are some other reasons why…

i think people
have a problem with all the Subway Alumni as well.
some Ohio people that weren’t OSU grads are rabid fans, but i don’t think anything compares to the ND Subway Alumni fanbase.

What is "Subway Alumni"?
It sounds like the “Notre Dame Prestige”, as far as athletic programs is going to take a big nose dive in the next 30 years, as all these old timers start dieing.

not necessarily
the Subway Alumni teach their kids to be ND fans too. Plus, a lot of Catholic who go to schools without football programs (Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Saint Louis, Fordham, etc.) all root for Notre Dame too.

...
…but the “greatest generation” (our grandfathers today) built Nodre Dames reputation by winning and being the best program in the country. It looks like as college football gets bigger and bigger Notre Dame is going to become less and less of a powerhouse.

it goes in cycles
look at some of the National powers right now…
how was USC football ten years ago?
how about Oklahoma?
now look at Florida State football now compared to five, ten, fifteen years ago. FSU went from being the Nation’s top powerhouse to the the third best program in their own state
Notre Dame may never be the powerhouse that they were in the 40s, or the Ara Era, or 1988-1993 Holtz years, but i think they’ll have a run of success eventually because that’s what history has taught us. it’s not like ND football is going to end up like CCNY basketball or something.

You realize you are describing a "shift" and not a "cycle" right?
The definition of a cycle is when things gain and lose power/relevance over and over again. Notre Dame has become a very decent D1 college football program. Where is the “cycle” in that?
There was a point last year when I thought my hometown team would give Notre Dame a run for its money and thats just pathetic. I still dont know if the UB Bulls would autmoatically lose, let alone get blown out, by Notre Dame last year. Thats scary.
