Notre Dame Bumbles and Stumbles and Tumbles To Navy, 23-21

Sigh.  We have a lot to talk about, friends, but enjoy the rest of your weekend and we'll get at it on Monday.  Sad times accomplished.  Solomon Burke, play us out.

While the defense deserves not kudos

for its shoddy effort yesterday (ND is a very poor tackling team), the bulk of the blame for yesterday’s shocking loss goes to the offense. The inability to score in the red zone was where the game was lost. With the talent and size disparity, ND should have scored 40+ points, yet when they got close, they struggled to find the end zone.

i've stayed on the fence for a long time with Charlie

but there’s nothing left to say anymore.

losing twice to Navy at home is both indefensible and inexcusable. though wins at Pitt and at Stanford are both unlikely anyway, there’s nothing he could do now to deserve coming back for another season regardless.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Nov 8, 2009 12:18 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

If we finish 9-3...

then Charlie will be, and probably should be, back. HOWEVER, I think it is more likely that we will finish 6-6 than 9-3 at this point. Next week could be ugly.

I understand that losing back-to-back home games to Navy is really really bad, but 9-3 is where we expected this team to be. Granted, there is something to be said for the way the games are played, but the bottom line looks acceptable.

Nevertheless, this team is not going to win out and Charlie will not be back.

P.S. sorry for jinxing the game with my comments earlier in the week

I agree 100%

If the Irish should win out, there’s a discussion, but since that is not going to happen, no discussion needed.

I look at our last 3 games and wonder if we can win a single one of them

Talent is good enough to beat them, coaching not so much. If we’re not ready to play NAVY NAVY NAVY NAVY how can we be ready to play these teams, better teams, teams just as hungry as we are not?

Agreed

I am thinking the same thing. We play a top 10/15 team @ Pitt. That could be really fucking ugly. UConn has a bye week leading up to us. Yea, they have lost three straight weeks, but this is a solid team with a week to prepare. They really need to beat us and will come out gunning. Stanford is now ranked and the game is there. Suddenly, 6-6 seems pretty damn realistic.

The sooner we can say goodbye to Weis the better. Let’s get Gruden lined up this week and then a week from today, after a blowout loss, we announce Weis will step down at the end of the season and Gruden will take over.

by djta on Nov 8, 2009 5:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

UConn lost against good teams too

I first heard of Gruden being connected to South Bend just a month ago. I was shocked by it, but I like the idea. He can bring fire and still recruit players because of his NFL connection.

Another guy I’d like would be Bronco Mendenhall, but really only because he’s younger. Brian Kelly too, but at the end of the day I don’t like the idea of buying someone out of their current job and ripping off another school. We should have higher standards. Plus, we’re better than Michigan.

Another factor to be considered

Charlie’s son apparently took a lot of abuse last year, most notably after the Syracuse debacle. It would not be surprising to hear Junior is taking a lot of grief again at school for the team’s failures this season. Weis came close to quitting after last season because of the taunting Junior received, so if it starts up again in earnest (kids will be kids), Weis may say enough is enough.

Doubtful

That would be a pretty strange reason to quit.

by djta on Nov 9, 2009 11:17 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It almost caused him to quit last season

I don't doubt that...

but if it is the case, Weis should probably just look for another profession. Because even if he goes back to being a coordinator in the NFL, if that team struggles he is going to get harassed again.

An assistant gets alot less notoriety

than a head coach, especially a head coach at such a high profile school like ND.

Fair enough

But if he is that worried about his kid not being able to take a little flack, then homeschool him, or find another profession.

And no matter where he goes, Weis is gonna get shit for not being able to beat Navy. And if he does stay a coach, and if he is as successful at coordinating like he was the first go around, then most likely he will get another head coaching shot, where he will once again be criticized for every thing he does.

Sad thing is...

if we would have just kicked that early field goal where we went for it at the goal line… VICTORY!

That's Silly

Who knows how the rest of the game would have played out. It is very different than simply tacking three points on to the final score. They might have returned the ensuing kickoff for a TD and blown us out. That is an exercise in futility.

Oh I know...

but since it doesn’t matter since it didn’t happen that way… Thats what Im sticking with.

Anything can happen

But putting points on the board early can make a big difference. That field goal could have woken us up.

I think the key play in the game was the reversal on the field of the fumble. I feel like the only person in the world who remembers a rule about not being able to review for a fumble after it was ruled down on the field. Whatever. Let’s just say he should have never dropped the damn ball, we go down the field and put a 3 or a 7 spot on the board, and the whole game is different from there on out.

We outscored them 21-9 in the second half.

Amen!

ND did not lose because it missed a couple of FGs. You could play the what if game with any number of plays when yo8u lose close like that.

I think what you were trying to say when you said that was flavor of the last three years… He’s done far more with a pretty low talent level than Weis has done with a pretty high level at ND, we should go after him aggressively.

I kinda like what Harbaugh is doing in Stanford...

Though I think I’ve had my fill of Stanford coaches.

Screw Harbaugh

Though I think he is a pretty good coach, just not the right guy for ND.

Im still a little bitter...

over him leading a mediocre Colts team to victory over the 13-3 top seeded Chiefs in the playoffs years ago. Fucking Lin Elliot.

why not?

He created a program at USD, and has recreated a program at Stanford. What’s not to like? There is not a coach in the country who is getting more out of his players than Harbaugh.

Next coach

Please everyone. Stop with the Brian Kelly, Bronco Mendenhall talk. Gruden, Saban, Meyer, someone on that level. The next mistake could end ND for at least all of our lifetimes.

by IrishFan on Nov 10, 2009 5:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

What's your beef with Kelly?

Like Meyer he took a down program and made it a power, so why wouldn’t ND consider him?

Why not

Turner Gill? Notre Dame has tried the big name coach and it has got you nothing. I think you ought to try someone that understands tradition and is going to embrace that tradition. He understands expectations and tradition from his time at Nebraska. Plus he would rebuild your program from the inside out which is what needs to happen for you guys to be a power every year. Sorry the quick fix of Wiess didn’t work, 30 million down the drain. Gill would have the ability to bring in a top notch staff since he doesn’t have the ego, and lets face it Notre Dame would be great place to get your start as say an offensive or defensive coordinator. Plus, the guy has had success recruiting to Nebraska and Buffalo imagine what he could do at ND. I know he isn’t the sexiest pick out there but he might be the right one.
