"Other"
Get Harbaugh, he is 2-1 vs USC and is doing it with the recruits at a top academic school. He also has been willing to take Michigan to task on their academic standards and has a definition of nasty that includes running the ball.

Rundown...
If Charlie stayed one more year I could live with it
Pass on John Gruden, Im not convinced that just because someone coached in the NFL that they will be good at the collegiate level
Brian Kelly would be my ideal candidate
Big Game Bob , Im thinking he may be a little overrated, he has been good at OU, but not great since his brother left
Mike Leech pass… Just pass.
Tony Dungy I dont think this is conceivably even possible, and read above
Kirk Ferentz, yeah I like this guy would probably be in the top 3. But Im not sure how available he is
Other… Im going with Harbaugh, I mentioned him somewhere else, and even people whom I dont see eye to eye with seem to agree that he would be good. I think Harbaugh would be my number 2 option.

Harbaugh
Jim Harbaugh has to be in the discussions should Weis be dismissed.

Others
I voted for Kelly but I think there are two other “others” besides Harbaugh.
What about Butch Davis? All the guy has done is beat 5 ranked opponents in a row. MNC with Miami. No one else on that list (save Bob Stoops, c’mon that’s not happening.)
Also, Pat Fitzgerald from Northwestern deserves a look.

Fitzgerald would be a coup
I don’t think you can get him though. He went to Northwestern and is a god to them.

Harbaugh is about to sign a huge extension
You’ll never get Ferentz..he is a Top Ten paid coach, so you can’t buy him. He has a Top 5 team coming back next year (Iowa loses three starters from this team). Gruden is a good pick but he won’t want to do recruiting. Brian Kelly is a very slim possibility as he too is about to sign a huge contract that includes Stadium alterations. Here are some dark horse contenders who i think you could get:
Gary Pinkel (Missouri) – he’s done all he can there. Proven winner at schools that have hard time attracing talent.
Gary Patterson (TCU) – tired of playing in Poinsettia Bowl after 11 victory seasons
Greg Schiano (Rutgers) – ever been to Rutger? Staidum holds like 40K. He can recruit and has a system that suits ND.
Tuner Gill (Buffalo) – if you can ever hire another black coach…and I doubt you can…this is the one.
I would not hire another guy from the NFL. Those guys never do well with the recruiting.
Final word: I would guess that ND has lost its edge in getting high profile coaches. It is just not a very desirable job. I would look for a young coach with potential and use your money clout to get him. Having said that…I think Weis comes back because
a) it would be very expensive to buy him out
b) there is not a no brainer coach out there (Brian Kelly is not coming to ND)
c) you made a committment to Weis, and he in turn made it to a number of recruits. It would kill your recruiting (see Michigan departures under Rich Rod) if you pulled the plug now.
I suggest your Admin tell Weis to lose weight, look literally and figuratively like a new man ready to lead this team instead of slob who is alway defensive in press conferences. If he isn’t up for it…then do the best you can to find the best dude out there.

Stanford is scrambling to put together an offer
but that does not mean Harbaugh is about to sign. Maybe he will, or maybe is interested in a higher profile job somewhere else, like ND, the highest profile job in college football still. The ND job would give Harbaugh a much bigger stage to play on than Stanford ever could, something I have little doubt he craves.

The ONLY options
1. Charlie Weis – Two weeks ago we were in the BCS hunt and we are in our current position largely because of uncharacteristic players’ mistakes.
2. Gary Patterson – If we fire Charlie Weis it will be for two main reasons – his teams don’t play defense and can’t run the ball. So find a coach who wins 10 games a year by doing just that – oh and along the way he still manages to put up 50 points a game.
3. Urban Meyer – if there is any truth to him still wanting the job he deserves the chance. But I’m not convinced his system will work long-term (or without Tebow for that matter – definitely not with Clausen) But who can argue with the SEC refs.. uh, I mean 2 championships.
Other non-options:
Brian Kelly – it shouldn’t come to this since I doubt Gary Patterson would turn down the job. Kelly’s teams get blown out by the big boys, rely heavily on a pass first offense and are shaky on defense – sound familiar?!?
Jon Gruden – I thought we needed a COLLEGE coach?
Tony Dungy – ditto Gruden.
Bob Stoops – where did this come from? Seriously?
Kirk Ferentz – Similar to Patterson but TCU is up to #4 right now and steps up on the big stage (see BYU and Utah games) and Iowa choked and has lost two in a row when it mattered.

Tidbits from ESPN
Brian Kelley according to a Cincinnati paper “‘As far as the rumors go, our kids don’t pay attention to them because I don’t,’ Kelly said. Kelly said he was humbled to have his name associated with a program like Notre Dame, ‘but our kids have become immune to it, as I have. It really doesn’t affect our day-to-day.’”
Harbaugh is fixing to sign an extension
Gruden did sign an extension
Bob Stoops: source said that Stoops has told confidants that he would be interested in taking over the Irish, also said that Ferentz is on the short list for the Irish

Ferentz
Where is this Ferentz talk coming from? You think Urban has off the field problems? Kirk Ferentz’s son scoffs at your Ak-47’s. You want to talk about off the field problems, go online and find out what happened to the girl who accused one of the Iowa players of rape. What follows is the most disgusting cover up and handling of an off the field situation in the history of college sports. Some people say Brian Kelly has a couple skeltons in the closet, Iowa’s closet is like a fucking Tim Burton movie.
Extensions don’t matter if you want someone, ask Michigan. And money is not an issue. If Swarbrick says it’s not an issue, trust me, it’s not an issue.

Stop dreaming
Ferentz has a better chance at a national title at Iowa (next year they will be a preseason top 5 team as has been stated on numerous football mag sites) and makes as much money as ND would ever pay him. If he leaves Iowa it is to go to the pros…
I hate to say this…but you are not getting a guy who has won national coach of the year in the past. That is not in the cards for you. So no Saban, Ferentz, Kelly, Meyer…those guys don’t need the headache. They have total control and are winning easily.

What ND needs:
Is to put the checkbook away and find someone willing to invest in Notre Dame. You don’t want Ferentz, you want the next Ferentz.
Notre Dame is not going to be a NC contender for several years. Find a guy who is willing to clean out the muck, make needed improvements and let success be a product of process.
Oh, and don’t be so smug about the problems of other programs. An unearned sense of superiority hasn’t gotten you far as of late, has it?
Excuse me for my bellicosity. And spelling. Bellicosity and spelling.

I doubt Ferentz will be leaving Iowa:
Why would he take a step down?

Hmmm, which program has the higher profile
Iowa or ND? Only the most myopic Iowa fan would say Iowa.

Which program wins?
Last three season Iowa 24-12, ND 16-19.
It’s probably Iowa’s huge recruiting advantage.

Hire from the inside?
I’m currently a senior at ND, and I have a few friends on the team. From everything I’ve heard (and seen with the Hawai’i Bowl), the players would really get behind Corwin Brown. We have all been upset with Weis not motivating the players, and CB has NO problem with this. The players will more readily get behind Corwin than they ever would with Weis. I want me a chest bumping, screaming coach that absolutely lights a fire under our team’s ass.

feel free to continue this is the other thread, but
I like the idea of keeping Corwin on the staff (unlike most of the others), but certainly not to be the head coach. He has no head coaching experience. We have been there and done that. He hasn’t been a particularly good recruiter. And, although you can probably put a lot of blame on Tenuta, his defenses have not been particularly impressive. Corwin is not ready to run ND, but he is a great coach and I hope he sticks around.

also
As I have heard others say, if college football was all about motivation, then Tony Robbins would be coaching college football.

Excellent point
it is not merely about game-day-scheming either. It is about culture, structure, coaching up talent week-to-week, and recruting “your guys” who buy into your values to establish ready-made chemistry.
It is not about accumulating great athletes. The Yankees, Raiders, Knicks, and Ron Zook have proved this by now.

Keeping Brown
not going to happen if there is a new HC. The new boss wants his own man, and I doubt that is Brown.

Absolutely no way
If Weis goes, take the underperforming staff with him, and that includes Brown.
