That last defensive series, but that TD, is making me breathe easier. This is going to be a ballgame.

they are throwing the kitchen sink at them
I’m usually not a fan of gimmick plays, but if you haven’t beaten a team in 7 years, I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

they aren't getting pressure, AND they're giving them a ton of space
That’s a recipe for a ton of passing yards.

We need to win the turnover battle to win the game.

They’d be well-advised to win the battle up front so he can’t get a head of steam going.

That's kinda what I thought
Haven’t really payed too much attention to any football in the last 3 years.
So let me get this straight
they leave 4 down on the line and drop 7. Wouldn’t a RB screen be sufficient?
Possibly...
USC is really fast so its going to be difficult to pick up 12 yards that way
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions
It may need to be setup...
not sure how you go about doing that, but if they drop 7 with the intention of looking for screen it wont work. Might have to run a draw or two first.

I hate Weis' "we should be content" attitude.
USC, Florida, and Alabama aren’t ever content being down. I hope that’s not his message to the players in the locker room.
If that IS the message he gives the players and USC comes out “not being content with a 6 point lead” and destroys us in the second half, I don’t see why he should coach here anymore.
That is absolutely the worst thing I’ve ever heard a coach say in a situation like this.
Fanaticism is not logical
I think he was content being 6 down
since they dominated us in the first half.
All things considered, 6 down isn’t so bad.
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m not content being down by six or by being dominated. We could have played a lot better and so could USC. Both teams made mistakes. Weis needs not worry about what the score is, but what he’s going to do to fire the offense up. The Defense has been brilliant.
He should have said “I’m greatful for the defense dominating USC’s offense and that I’ll get this offense together during the half.” Show some moxie!
Fanaticism is not logical
Really?
USC has driven into the red zone twice only to get field goals. That isn’t dominating.
Regardless it doesn’t matter. I seriously doubt he goes into the locker room and tells the guys good job for only being down 6. More than likely he is going to talk about execution and how this game is still anyone’s for the taking.
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Against USC
Field goals are as good as turnovers. Anytime you bend but don’t break against a great team, you’re doing very well. I’m proud of this defense. I’m very disappointed in the offense and the inability to protect against the three and four man rush. It doesn’t matter if we give up 0 or 70 points, if we can’t score, we can’t win. That’s why field goals are good enough. You can’t beat USC by kicking field goals, only by scoring touch downs, so giving up anything less than a touchdown against USC is a win.
The Irish D is fighting the good fight today.
Fanaticism is not logical
USC's defense is better than their offense though

This is what happens when you're "content"
When you’re content going in 13-6 and playing like shit, you shouldn’t expect anything but getting lit up in the second half.
Fanaticism is not logical
Really?
I dont think he was content with losing, I think he was content only being down by 6 when being thoroughly outplayed in the first half
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures

How so?
USC should have been winning by 17
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions
And that's the problem
If you’re a HEAD coach, and you’re content with anything, whether it’s down by 6, down by 17, or up by anything between, you’re setting your team up for what you see now.
Do you think Carrol was content being up by 6?

You can also use it to prove...
why Charlie should have been content, by only being down 6 to a superior team who is more than capable of having us down by 17 or more going into halftime.
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions
It's okay
Weis doesn’t get it either. That you should never settle for anything and always keep digging for more. That’s why he’s a coordinator and not a head coach. Calling plays is easier than getting the kids to run them right.
Fanaticism is not logical
No you dont get it.
Charlie wasn’t content with losing, he was content that it very well could have been worse, and more than likely should have.
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Its was just coach speak
Im sure he wasn’t actually content.

Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions
time to face facts
This isn’t an elite-level program. It’s a good team with some talent that’s going to play some exciting games, but we don’t really belong on the field with a top-10 program, and will struggle against any top-20 programs too.
by long time listener on Oct 17, 2009 6:38 PM EDT reply actions
My thing is...
Charlie gets good recruits, but it doesn’t seem to me that they have get to great. It seems to me that he isn’t very good at coaching them up
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions
that's my problem too
We constantly hear about how great the recruiting classes are, but we never take the next step. At some point – and we might be well past that point – it’s the fault of the coaching staff.
by long time listener on Oct 17, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with you that Weis is probably a better Coordinator than Coach
but fact of the matter is, I dont think you can take much out of a 15 second conversation on the way to the sideline. Weis has proven to be brutally honest and, if he was a little thankful that they were still in it at halftime I have no problem with that.
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions
He is brutally honest
And if he says that in that situation, what’s he thinking the rest of the time? I think his personality bleeds out, and it’s bleeding out at practice and the locker room. I think he’s giving the Irish players the wrong message at the wrong times more often than not.
It’s such a subtle thing.
Fanaticism is not logical
But he isn't going to say that to a bunch of kids in the locker room.
he may be brutally honest but he isn’t stupid. If he has done anything, he is really good at clever ways of motivation.
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Motivation only goes so far in college
Talent trumps all in college football. No amount of motivation is going to make the ND players bigger stronger faster.
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions
That raises another huge question
Why the hell are the Irish players always so much smaller? Does Charlie, or anyone else, know where the weight room is? I know Brady Quinn did. He should have shared.
Fanaticism is not logical
I think it comes down to the fact that...
its going to be hard for a school to recruit morally questionable people to play nasty defense
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions
How is it racist?
I dont think you are going to get people with serious mean streaks to come to ND, and Im not sure ND would have them. It isn’t a race issue. It has nothing to do with skin color.
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions
It's the whole "We can't get thugs" issue.
What color skin do the nasty defenders in the SEC have? I’ll give you a hint, it’s not white. That entire idea hinges on the fact that these nasty black kids are too stupid to go to South Bend. And it’s not true, and it’s racist. The antedote is “Coaching up”
Fanaticism is not logical
I never used the word thug..
and that was intentional because I almost did.
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions
I think its unfortunate...
and I really try not to be racist, but its hard to not notice that most of the nasty defenders are black. Im sure it has something to do with having something to prove.
I dont get racism, so sometimes I come off racist out of a little ignorance, I have so little dealing with other races, my high school had zero non-white students. K-12
Desperately hoping for Desperate Measures
by averagegatsby on Oct 17, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions
I wasn't accusing you of racism
It’s just a racist comment and ignorant because it’s not true. It’s an excuse. That’s all.

There are few things in life as Heart wrenching as being a ND fan...
My life has been torture since the loss to Florida State in the championship game.

All of which really happened before I could appreciate it...
First football game I ever watched was ND’s opening game in 89… One year after they won it all.

My Dad's a Cub fan.
Every year he says “this is the year” and I don’t have the heart to tell him,“no Dad. This is not the year.It will never happen They suck.” At least ND has championships.

there is no reason for them not to be more competitive though.
They have nearly unlimited funds, I can’t imagine they wont improve when the new ownership takes over.

and the main reason I would… USC has been so good in the Red Zone all year, and with a blocked XP it may be hard to hang with them

If you really do hate being a fan of ND, give it up and do yourself and this board a favor.

sorry, venting is one thing
but saying he hates being a ND fan is another thing. gatsby is just unstable pure and simple. He needs to get a life or at least a girl friend (or boy friend if that is what floats his boat).

I still have no idea what your problem with me is...
its like you have singled me out for some unknown reason. Why would anyone love being a fan of this team? Its not like they have done much to reward us lately. I dont see how that statement warrants you being such a prick.
You say Im the one that needs a life, but you go out of your way to attack me, and its not like I can just stop being a fan, it doesn’t work like that.

BC game
If ND lays an egg again against BC, the season spirals downhill, but a solid win and ND continues on an upward trajectory for 2010.

Optimistically. I think we can beat BC and every other team on the remaining schedule.
But that means we have to bring our A game each game. None of these teams are cupcakes.
You’re right. We can’t have two straight losses. We’ve lost to two good teams, put that in our back pocket and go wipe the floor with the rest.
Fanaticism is not logical
ND can beat anyone left on the schedule
but I doubt ND will run the table. There will be at least one more trip up (BC, Pitt and Stanford seem the likeliest suspects).
As for your comment : "We’ve lost to two good teams, " I disagree. We lost to one really good team (USC) and one team working its way back to being good (UM).

If ND plays as tough as they did against USC
They’ll beat BC by 25 points.
I shit you not. I’m looking forward to winning big over BC.
Look yonder, fellow SSSers. 2010 looms bright!

ND by 25???
That seems overly optimistic. , it could happen, but it is unlikely, BC is no dog.

the game might've been lost in the last sequence
Robby Parris caught the 13-yard pass on 4th and 10 (with the personal foul added on) with :35 seconds left. clock obviously stopped for a first down.
from that point forward, Notre Dame ran just one play – Clausen’s throw away and the clock whittled all the way down to :09.
i have no idea why ND seemed to be so casual getting up to the line and getting that play going. they wasted 26 seconds just to get a throw-away off. not saying they would’ve won the game with better clock management, but they certainly would’ve given themselves at least one more chance. infuriating.
