Essential Community Project: We Need A Nickname For Michael Floyd

While we all want to just go over that third quarter repeatedly or start previewing Stanford,  there's something that needs to be done first:

Getting Michael Floyd a nickname.  While he's only four games into his  young career, he needs to be known as something other than just "Mike Floyd."  While that's a fine moniker under most circumstances, if Floyd is as good as we think he'll be (already is), he needs something far, far flashier.

When suggesting names, let's just stick to a few rules:

1) Don't insult other people's suggestions.  I'm sure some of them will probably be awful, but if it is somehow starts the cogs in motion to the person who comes up with Floyd's alias, it will be well worth it for the sake of Irish lore.

2) Remember, nicknames don't necessarily have to follow any particular rules.  It can be rhyme, call upon the awesome art of alliteration or just something that sounds sweet and is borderline nonsensical.  Throw as much as you can against the wall, and hopefully something sticks.

3) Bonus points if you can somehow make this somehow related to pop culture or mythology.

Back in the day, when Ralph Wiley, Hunter S. Thompson and Bill Simmons reigned supreme, Page 2 was nickname crazy (and much better than it is now).  Here's a list of what readers voted the best nicknames overall, along with the best football nicknames.  While we shouldn't steal anything for young Michael, we should look everywhere for inspiration.

So that's your project, folks.  Toss up your ideas, and hopefully something just sticks out as clearly the best, which wil bring honor and respect to the creator for the rest of eternity.

“Romulus” Floyd. From him, we shall build an empire.

 1. Flyby Floyd
 2. Phenomenal Floyd
3. Flyboy Floyd (Pretty Boy Floyd)

I like "Flyby"

If we were to get a little loose, Mike Floyd → Pink Floyd → “The Wall,” but that should probably be saved for a lineman of some sort. I’m also fond of “Minnesota Slim” for absolutely no reason. If you go with the Twin Cities idea, then the Romulus/Remus connection makes more sense, but “Romulus” Floyd doesn’t roll off the tongue all that easily.

This post is already really enjoyable and it is only an hour old.

Well there’s always “Flyin’” Mike Floyd, but that might not be personal enough

Michael ‘the force’ floyd – thinking unstoppable force

Also HOV Floyd – you gotta have two on him at all times or you’re in trouble

As in...

“And here come the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, led by "The Twin City Terror”, Michael Floyd."

Seriously, how hard (as in badass) is that nickname?

FROM GOLDEN

In Golden’s interview he refers to Floyd as “Flow”… I like it.

Flash Floyd

i was gonna go with MF’n Beast, but i figured this was less profane.

He's one bad mutha...

Shut yo’ mouth. Since the MF initials are out, go with Shaft. It might convince the team to go with some different hairstyles as well. Everyone wins.

How about “Money Mike”? Or even just plain “Money”… Swingers is my favorite movie, as you might have noticed.

“He’s so money, and you don’t even know it.” ~ an irish fan talking to a michigan fan.

A lot of these are really good - Flow, Money, Twin City Terror

Please keep ‘em coming. And any reference to “Swingers” is definitely worth bonus points. I’m also not adverse to giving him a bunch of nicknames that can be reeled off when introducing him, like a boxer.

I know it’s been done, but “Pretty Boy” Floyd is always a classic. I really like “Flash” Floyd.

another vote here for Minnesota Slim … mostly ’cause it just has a real nice ring to it. Also, his humble background and hard-working, tough nature are perfect for a blues man.

Important: one name status

I like Fly or Flow. And just one word. Not “Fly Floyd,” but rather ’Fly." Like Madonna or Bono or a Spanish basketball player.

dark side of the moon

Michael “Pink” Floyd………..money, grab it go ahead and make a stash……

by buckaroo bonzai on Sep 29, 2008 4:46 PM EDT reply actions

Michael Floyd

Money is pretty good. Plus Favreau and Vaughn are ND fans and Rudy cast members no less. It’s suits him well. From the very first pass thrown his way in an ND uniform he was Money. Doesn’t get much better than that. Unless I hear something better, Money Mike Floyd gets my vote.

by San Diego Irish on Sep 29, 2008 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

He's made some pretty good looking plays

Mike “the miracle” Floyd.
“Firebird” Floyd
I like buckaroo bonzai’s idea of “Pink” Floyd

"Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of themselves without that law is both.
