Can We Revoke Alumni Status?

A few people sent me this little diddy from The Observer today:

A rare visit to a Notre Dame football game a week ago with a fellow alum revealed to both of us the degeneration of what was once a festival we could celebrate without endangering our souls. Standing outside the Stadium, we witnessed a student clad only in shorts with this lewd message on his back: "Suck this." and a golden arrow pointing downward. He was in a frenzied state accompanied by more than a half dozen Notre Dame girls scantily clad, their bodies painted green and gold. The student was dancing around and engaging older alumni with their families, lifting his arms up saying: "Come on, let's get it up." As the alumni fans walked by they nervously greeted him and joined him in his revelry.

Unfortunately this behavior was not an isolated incident that day. It grieved me to see the Notre Dame football tradition being prostituted by a spirit of lewdness and revelry. My thought is: Enjoy Notre Dame football, celebrate but do not become frenzied, drink but do not get drunk, clown if you like but do not be lewd. Let's not lose Heaven over earthly festivals.

Just a quick lesson: If you ever find yourself typing the words "Lets not lose Heaven over earthly festivals...", you should probably just stop, and at the very least, at least not click send.  If you're angered by a painted student urging you to get excited and support the team, you should probably make those few visits to Notre Dame for football games even less frequent.  There are 45 other weekends a year when people getting excited and bonding over Irish football won't be there to offend you.

Don't get carried away

You have a point, but so does this dude. I recognize people sit on their hands at games and that students and alumni have this love/hate thing going on. But being angered by painted cheerleaders encouraging loud cheers cheers is hardly what this guy was honked at. He may have rifled some blanket statements, but the kid’s body sign wasn’t appropriate for you, me, him or any opponent at a football game. I would like to take my kid to a game in the future, and he just doesn’t need to see that crud.

"Suck this" is going too far

But I can make a very safe assumption that general tailgate shenanigans – the ones most Irish students, their parents and alumni absolutely love and enjoy – would offend this guy. Besides, this student body is still recovering from 3-9, where it seemed like the only way to survive a football game was to make sure you weren’t coherent enough to remember it.
