Russell Carter and Rob Kurz Find NBA Summer League Homes
Ah, the NBA Summer League. Taking place in Vegas over a ten day period in mid-July, the summer program exposes young Association players to everything they need to be accustomed to: the temptation of gambling, late-night partying and groupies while competing against their peers. There's a few players every year who have outstanding summer leagues and make the outskirts of a regular season roster, but very seldom does summer league success equal any sort of tangible effect on the game come late October.
Regardless, two beloved Notre Dame alumni, just graduated Rob Kurz and '07 high-flyer Russell Carter have signed on with the Golden State Warriors and Orlando Magic, respectively. Kurz will be playing with first round draft selections and skeleton warriors Brandan Wright and Anthony Randolph for the post-Baron Davis W's while Carter attempts a high number of long distance bombs and sky-walking dunks with first round pick Courtney Lee and a couple of my personal favorites, UNLV's Kevin Kruger (son of Lon who led the Rebs to an '07 Sweet Sixteen) and Dayton's Brian Roberts.
(By the way, I know I'm a biased lover of all things Russell Carter, but after returning from overseas and playing in the D League for the final seven games of the season, his numbers are trending way, way up as he gets more playing time. I believe in Russell - and his 24 points on 10 of 15 shooting, 9 boards, 3 steals, 3 assists in the season finale - even if no one else does.)
