Business Is Good: NBC, Notre Dame Extend Contract Through 2015
Notre Dame is renewing its television contract with NBC.
The university and NBC announced Thursday they have agreed to a five-year deal that runs through the 2015 season. The current contract was scheduled to expire in 2010.
This contract includes seven homes games per season. It allows for the first time an eighth off-site home game played at a neutral stadium.
NBC has broadcast Irish football since 1991.
On Blue Gray Sky this morning, Pat took a look back at an old SI article when Notre Dame and NBC initially got together. Check over his piece as the commentary from the announcement of this agreement starts rolling in (Sorry, Big Ten and Big East; we will not be joining you anytime soon). Some of the comments from February 1990 about the first deal are extremely entertaining:
"It's been a fun year for all of us," said Penn State coach Joe Paterno . "We got to see Notre Dame go from an academic institute to a banking institute."
"I wasn't surprised by this, I was shocked," said Georgia athletic director Vince Dooley. "Surprise, shock, greed and ultimate greed. That's the reaction I'm getting from people."
"To me," said Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles , "Notre Dame has vacated its leadership role. This is greed."
WNDU has a few more details if you're interested.
