I can agree with keeping Charlie for one more season but I siencerely hope that he has learned a lesson about what it means to be the coach at ND.  I don't buy his reported "decided schematic advantage"---he was gifted in New England with one of the most cool and accurate passers in the NFL.  I also believe that he MUST improve his assistant coaching staff, because, as in a business---"you only go as far as your people take you".  As with a CEO, the head coach must choose great assistants.  Charlie has to be very carefully decided in whom he chooses in the offense assistant coaches.

I recall that it was Lou Holtz' strategy to find the weakness in the other team's defense that created its strength.  I have not heard any of this from Charlie.  This is what an offense guru must do unless he just plain has the best athelets BY FAR.  That disticntion goes to USC for the next couple of years.  Not ND.

If left to me I would be delighted to have the GT guy take over the defense and take a very serious look at Dayne Crist for the starting quaterback job next year.  JC has not shown me anything but physical toughness---he doesn't seem to have the demeanor to consistently do the type of job we have seen Theismann, Montana, and a host of others do.

On the more positive side, I am delighted with the progress shown in the other ND sports, i.e. basketball (men's and womens), soccer, etc.  If only our football team would show up.......

I see no reason. . .

…why it shouldn’t be an open competition at QB this summer. In the second half of the season, JC didn’t do anything to earn incumbent status. Let Dayne take a legitimate crack at it.

He did have a "decided schematic advantage"...

it lasted until the first bowl game, people caught on, then he couldn’t train HS kids to play college football and he sucks. He was gifted with a sixth round pick out of that crazy offensive machine that was Lloyd Carr’s Michigan and despite that fact that Brady hung around with Charlie Weis a lot, he turned into a decent quarterback. And then there’s that other Brady who seems also to be a decent quarterback.

If he had players that had their skills down adequately, I think he’d still be a good schemer. I wish that things had turned around immediately when he started calling plays again this year, but him calling plays or not is not what’s worrying me. The O-line, that worries me.
