Five Turnovers.

Let's run through just the first three:

  • Second quarter, 3rd and 7 at the 50 following ND's first non-penalty first down, and Jimmy tries to throw into vacuum-sealed coverage.  Pick returned for a TD.  That hurts.
  • Second quarter, 30 seconds left,1st and 20 following a monster of a hold from Dan Wenger as ND is putting together its first solid drive of the game, and Jimmy misses badly on a throw he never should've attempted anyways.  Momentum going into halftime...killed.
  • And yet, it's not. Coming out of the half, the Irish hold BC to -3 yards on it's first three plays, but then Tate fumbles the punt and gives the ball back to BC who score seven plays later.

I know we didn't look good on offense in the first half save for a couple of spots in the two drives that ended in picks, but these three turnovers represent a 17-21 point swing.  Even if Aponavicius didn't go all Walker (Brandon Walker Classic, not New Brandon Walker) and miss two easy field goals, eliminating these turnovers would still put ND within one score.  Hell, even after Tate's fumble makes futile the D's earlier stops, they still came out and held BC to a FG attempt after Eric "Slow and steady wins the...OH GOD! WHERE'S THE BALL!" Maust's second blocked punt in two games.

What comes next:  Good defense from both teams for the next four drives until BC punts to ND's 10 with 18 seconds left in the 3rd.  We get the ball back.  We're moving.  Mike Floyd draws a PI.  Clausen scrambles for five.  He hits Hughes for five.  Floyd runs across the field for thirty.  And then?  Bad throw by Jimmy.  Game over.

But it's not game over.  Defense forces a three-and-out.  Great punt by BC and it's ND ball, first and ten at their own twenty-five with 10:45 to play.  We start moving again.  Comeback time until 4th and 1.  Sighs.

But God bless 'em, the defense comes through again and gets another stop.  5:30 left, ND ball.  We're moving...and another bad throw and we're not moving anymore.  Game over.

A few things to ponder before slitting your wrists, calling Jon Gruden, sacrificing family members to the Gods of Football or posting on Irish Eyes, NDNation, et al:

Five turnovers lead to, at the very minimum, a 23 point swing.  The sixth and seventh "turnovers" come from the missed fourth-down opportunities.  Those resulted in at least another 6 missed ND points.  Assuming no TDs from the offense, competency from Aponavicius and another solid performance from Walker, turnovers and "turnovers" cost ND a 21-9 win.

Look: we were 3 and 9 last year.  We've got the same team minus a bonehead safety, a competent center, an NFL caliber TE and a projected All-American corner and plus one helluva freshman WR, a decent and improving right guard and some promising new defenders.

We're young and inexperienced.  Not just on the field, but on the sidelines.  Read this article from BGS.  CW may have already linked to it, but here it is again.  Inexperience leads to bad throws.  Inexperience leads to muffed punts.  Inexperience leads to only giving each back six carries.  Inexperience (and maybe a little arrogance) leads to a coach calling only the fourth down plays.

Talent and time build good football teams.  We've got the talent on the field.  We keep bringing in more talent.  It's not like our coaches are talentless, they did have other jobs before they were chosen to come to ND.  We need time.  They'll get it.  And here's a newsflash:  We might not compete for a national championship next year.  But I believe that we'll be a darn fine looking football team.  And the year after that.  And the year after that.

Final aside:  If you want to fire a football coach, wait until after the game is over to call for his head.  Not when the team you care about is still in the game.  The team works for you all week in practice.  We all can support them for at least three hours.

Go Irish.  Beat Midshipmen.

That punt block was not Maust's fault.

It was the fault of two separate ND guys who did an “Ole” block on the guy who wound up stuffing the punt.

excuses

BC played poorly. Our defense was not the problem, they played 60 minutes. Special teams, offensive line, play calling…pick your favorite expletive. CW said he wasn’t talkiong about 2007 it was over. Well better review the film certainly played like it. That was a poorly played and coached game. I just wish I could make Charlies money for the same poor performance.

I'm going to guess

that this will be my favorite post written about Notre Dame this week. Yes, this loss sucked. The worst of the year so far, in my mind. I wish this team were a lot better than they are. But I think it would be unreasonable for me to expect them to be much better than they are. They’ve played a number of teams that litter the bottom half of the top 25 (Michigan State, North Carolina, Pitt, Boston College), lost to all of them, but in those losses shown that they’re just about to that level. With another year of progress and strong recruiting, it’s pretty easy to see how these guys turn in to a Top 25 team. And isn’t that what we want? I’d love to win a championship every year, but that’s unreasonable. It is reasonable, I think, to expect a team that consistently finds itself in the polls, and I feel like we’re almost there. And it’s Charlie that’s doing it. I feel like there’s a clear progression and direction going on here, and I trust in it. With the momentum that I think is building by competing heavily with some pretty good teams, do we honestly want to start over with someone else?
Before this week, I’m not sure there’s a team we played that proved themselves irrefutably better than us. Michigan State, probably. And yes, it’s not cool that Notre Dame is losing those games. That sucks. But we’ve been competitive in every game. And that’s a damn good thing. You don’t can a coach when his team is competitive in every game they play. We’re so worried—and rightly so—about having a coach and staff with experience. Well, the way to get that experience is to be patient with the current staff. A new coach will have less experience with the school, with the players, etc. This is a pretty decent team that shows a lot of signs of becoming a pretty good team with another year of experience. This is not a terrible place to be. It could be better, but if a few things go different, we win that game. If we’re patient, we will start winning those games. Everything will be alright.

"I feel like there’s a clear progression and direction going on here"

a 17-0 loss to a mediocre-at-best Boston College team doesn’t seem like “clear progression” to me. i’d agree that ND has more talent than BC, but talent doesn’t mean anything if the kids play like they don’t care.

“But we’ve been competitive in every game”
the BC game was not competitive. that was a 17-0 blowout (if there is such thing). ND was outplayed, outhustled, outexecuted, and outcoached. BC’s kids played like it was the biggest game in their lives, while ND played like they could care less. watching ND sleepwalk through a lopsided loss to BC was very troubling. let’s face it, all the bluechips in the world aren’t going to matter if there is no effort behind the talent.

i am not a Weis hater, and have spent a lot of time defending him to people that don’t follow the program but merely listen to what the media tells them. that being said, come on guys! a 17-0 loss to BC is inexcusable and it’s starting to make me wonder whether Charlie has control of this program. where’s the progress this year? a gift-wrapped win over Michigan’s worst team ever? a home win over 5-5 Stanford? a home win over a Purdue team that arguably has the worst offense in the Big Ten?

i agree that firing Weis at this point is stupid because almost all of the key players are freshman and sophomores. what i don’t agree with is glossing this 5-4 record over and acting like 17-0 losses in rivalry games to “backup” colleges and losses to Dave Wannstedt are acceptable.

beat Navy, beat Syracuse, win a bowl game and 8-5 isn’t a bad consolation prize considering the armageddon 2007 season. lose to Navy and i don’t think Weis should be retained. i hope the playcalling improves, i hope JC improves his decision-making, i hope Robert Hughes finds whatever he lost in the 2007 offseason, i hope Michael Floyd and Golden Tate continue to make strides, i hope linebackers like Neal and Smith and Fleming continue to gel, i hope… but, this team is going to have to show me that it’s worth hoping for better days with a strong finish.

Unfortunately, Saturday night in Chestnut Hill brought the Notre Dame Will Be Back train to a screeching halt.
