Season predictions

I think there's a duty among bloggers to make an ass out of themselves from time to time.  In this case, I'll attempt to predict each game of the season.  Everyone should save this article and remind me how dumb I am (just don't call me dumber than Jay Paterno) every now and then.  Here we go:

Georgia Tech - Win - I'm hoping this season mimics our 2005 season and if you recall, our expectations were low before that season.  But in our first game, Weis' ability and creativity shone through.  Of course we don't have Brady Quinn as we did in '05, but I believe we have some better running backs and offensive line.  The defense that Brown brings in will confuse a young GT team and I think they'll turn the ball over of more than one occasion.  The key will be for the offense or special teams to capitalize on those mistakes.  I think we'll win in a very close game.

Penn State - Win - I'm sure the bloggers over at that Skinemax/PSU blog are going to love this prediction, which is part of the reason I made it.  I realize that the likelihood of going into Beaver Stadium and defeating a more experienced (but not talented) Penn State squad is lower than most would hope.  But I'm confident that Corwin Brown can control Anthony Morelli's offense.  Our offense should be able to get some good looks and be able to score at least a few touchdowns.  This is the least confident game I'm predicting, but it'd be a shame for me to admit that I predict a loss.  Down with the Lions.

Michigan - Loss - The Big House is overrated but we'll be coming off two tough weekends against good opponents and I think this will be a breaking point for our young team.  Michigan is not as good as they think they are but they have talent at the important positions and should be able to beat us pretty soundly.  I hate to say it, but that's my belief.

Michigan State - Win - Weis is done losing to Michigan State and so am I.  We haven't beaten them in South Bend in ages, but I think this is the year.  Michigan State is bringing in a new quarterback and a new coaching staff and they don't have Minter to freely move the ball on either.  Big win for an improving squad.

Purdue - Win - Boiler up, Purdue, you're going down.  The wide-open offenses that Purdue and Michigan State had in the previous years worked well against Rick Minter's defense (incredibly well, actually), but I'm not so sure they'll fare as well against us as they have in the past.  Their defense is actually pretty promising, but Joe Tiller is an idiot and it's not too hard to out-coach him.

UCLA - Loss - Every time we travel to the West Coast to play football against a school other than Stanford (or a team coached by Mr. Willingham), I always get a little worried.  It's a long trip and a very overwhelming one and UCLA should be a lot better than last year.  We shouldn't have beaten them last year but we did anyways and I think the `revenge' factor might give us some problems this year.  Karl Dorrell will save his job, once again.

BC - Win - I think BC is one of the more underrated teams on our schedule.  Matt Ryan is a very good quarterback and they have some very good talent.  Their problem lies with Jagodzinski, their new head coach.  For as much crap as Tom O'Brien got from BC fans, he was a good coach who minimized mistakes and put winning teams on the field at all times.  Jagodzinski is a first time head coach, and unlike Charlie Weis in 2005, doesn't have quite the pedigree that he had.  He's only 4 years removed from a stint in Green Bay coaching tight ends (doesn't Notre Dame have a former NFL TE coach coaching TE's in college?).  Bottom line is the guy doesn't impress me and both the offense and defense should be maturing with more time and experience.  I've wanted to play this game for awhile and I hope the team realizes our

USC - Loss - I'm confident that Weis will beat USC in the next couple of years but this year just isn't the year.  I think we'll stick with them until the 10-minute mark in the third quarter and then things start slipping away.  USC is a terrific team (they are the only true contender this year) and their defense will be able to control our young offense.  On the other side of the field, I think Booty will have found his receivers by then and his running backs should be able to control the line of scrimmage and break for some long runs.  Damnit, I hate this team.

Navy - Win - We're not being coached by Willingham anymore, ladies.  It's just never going to happen, at least not for awhile.

Air Force - Win - Just don't see it happening for awhile, either.

Duke - Win - This isn't men's basketball, right?  Because if it was, I'd give them much more of a chance.  No way we lose to a team who couldn't win one game last year.

Stanford - Win - I eagerly await this game just to hear some of Harbaugh's Notre Dame remarks.  It should be a good time!

There it is, there's my predictions.  A regular season record of 9-3.  Let's hope I'm wrong and we win more.

Ridiculous predictions
You are insane!  At best ND will get two wins in the first 8 games and that is only if GT blows it again.

Pot, meet kettle.
Ok, I'll give props for a funny zinger. But I'll also remind you of the batshit-crazy preseason optimism alot of PSU fans had last year (before the 41-3 beatdown, of course). If you have the time (and if Mike hasn't taken them down), go over to BSD and check out last summer's reader poll results, and marvel at the lunacy of a fanbase where 20-30% thought Morelli would compete for the Heisman and PSU would win the B10.

Go Ahead
They're still there.

I threw in Morelli on the Heisman question as a joke (see the shameless homer crack) and I think people took it as such. If I had put the backup fullback on there he probably would have got 10 votes. It's worth noting the voters correctly picked Troy Smith (39%) and were generous in giving Brady Quinn 37% of the vote.

Here is a poll where before the season I asked how far Penn State was going to go.

I agree that expectations were definitely higher than performance in 2006, but I don't think that is justification for calling them delusional. They're just optimistic. That's how it is in the preseason. Everyone says if this goes right and that goes right we'll go undefeated.

Then the week of the Notre Dame game I asked who was going to win. 54% of the vote said Notre Dame with 25% of those saying in a blowout. Of the 52 votes that said PSU would win, 43 of them said it was going to be close. So I think most Penn State fans had braced themselves for a loss, though the manner in which it happened was a hard pill to swallow.

I don't think the Penn State fan base as a hole is any different than any other fan base. A few morons on the internet stick out, but you can't use that to generalize everyone. Good luck on your season.

I agree totally
"Penn State fan base as a hole"?  There's no need to disagree with that statement.
